Why Appearance Matters In Business
You’ve heard it a thousand times: Don’t judge a book by its cover.
Although there are times in life where this saying is so important… say for instance when you’re meeting someone new. It’s always a good idea to have a conversation with and get to know someone new before you form your opinion of them, right? I think we can pretty much all agree on that one.
Well, what about in business?
The truth is that most people DO judge your business based presentation and appearance alone.
After all, it only takes 50 milliseconds for a person to form an opinion about your business based on the appearance of your website. This snap judgment is the same for the rest of your business’ visual identity as well, whether it be through a business card, your Facebook page, your landing page, or even YOUR presentation when meeting and interacting with someone! ALL of these things (and more) make up the “brand” of your business! This is why brand strategy and design is crucial to the long term success of your business!
So, I guess we could say that in business, presentation is everything.
Don’t believe me? Here are 3 stats to back it up...
38% of people will completely stop engaging with a website if content/layout is unattractive
Yep, we’re talking stop in their tracks and click that little back button. Gonzo! (Source)
First impressions are 94% design related!
In a study conducted by Missouri University of Science and Technology, researchers discovered that only 6% of the study participants based their opinion of a company on the actual content of a website. But a whopping 94% of participants said they based their opinion of a company on the physical appearance and design of the company. That’s HUUUGEEEE guys!
Mobile responsiveness matters!
Mobile devices now account for nearly 2/3 of all time spent online, so it’s important that your website is set up to be easily accessed on mobile devices (even more so than desktop!).
So, the question is, how does your business look to the world? You shouldn’t have to think long and hard about this one… what do people say? Are you attracting clients? Are you attracting the right clients? Are they paying you what you're worth? Do you feel confident in your brand and the next steps?
If you're not sure if now is the right time for a rebrand, I wrote all about it here.
