Maybe you’re wondering… can we really trust scripture?
The Bible consists of 66 books written by 40 different authors in 3 different languages over 1,500 years. And if that isn’t crazy enough, the Bible has a cohesive and consistent, singular story of redemption and restoration that all culminates with the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, accurately prophesied centuries earlier.
When it comes to whether or not we can trust the Bible, It’s easy to look to passages like 2 Timothy 3:16-17, which says,
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
But what if we’re not convinced of the accuracy or authenticity of scripture in the first place?
Luckily, this is a question that many scholars have asked and studied over the years. Here are a mix of books and resources to consider if you would like to learn more about this topic.
Maybe you want to know more about following Jesus and finding peace in life…
The world might look to family, wealth, prosperity, success, or health to find peace. But, scripture points to something radically different.
Before we search for answers on peace and freedom in business, we must first find the key to true and lasting peace and freedom in LIFE.
SCRIPTURE TELLS US THAT WE ARE ALL BORN SINNERS (Romans 3:23, Romans 5:12, James 4:17)…
Because of this, we are fully separated from God (Isaiah 59:1-2, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, James 1:14-15).
Throughout history, man has been on a constant search for something that will bring lasting hope and peace. Many people try to fill this void with money, success, or health. But, if you’ve had any of these, you know they don’t last. Money will run out. The markers of success are elusive and always changing. Good health will leave us and family members will eventually pass away.
Others will try to conclude their pursuit of lasting hope with good works. And while doing good things is great and will make you feel good for a while... the feeling is fleeting and another good deed must follow, followed by another good deed, followed by another. You can never be good enough.
Thanks be to God, He has given us scripture as a guide to teach us right from wrong, but will we forever be dependent on our ability to obey His laws and do good deeds to find salvation? To finally fill this void in our lives for good?
Let’s dive a bit deeper into scripture to see what His word says about this...
SCRIPTURE TELLS US THAT NO ONE IS WITHOUT SIN (Romans 3:10)…
But, it also tells us that there is one way to fix this problem and (praise God) it doesn’t rest on our shoulders. There is only one way to find true peace and it’s not in how hard we can work or how much we can achieve.
THE ANSWER? JESUS CHRIST.
Scripture tells us that...
Romans 5:8 | 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (ESV)
John 3:16 | 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (ESV)
Ephesians 2:8-9 | 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (ESV)
Titus 3:5-7 | 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (ESV)
THIS IS THE GOOD NEWS OF THE BIBLE, THE GOSPEL MESSAGE.
It’s the message of the gift of God’s own Son who became man (fully man and fully God), lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sin, and was raised from the grave, proving both of the facts: He is God’s Son and the value of His death was the substitute for our sins.
Romans 1:2-4 | 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord (ESV)
Romans 4:23-26 | 23 And when God counted him as righteous, it wasn’t just for Abraham’s benefit. It was recorded 24 for our benefit, too, assuring us that God will also count us as righteous if we believe in him, the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God. (NLT)
2 Corinthians 5:21 | 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (ESV)
1 Peter 3:18 | 18 For Christ also suffered[a] once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, (ESV)
HOW DO YOU RECEIVE CHRIST?
The Bible states “Whoever has the Son has life” (1 John 5:12). We can receive the Son, Jesus Christ, as our Savior by personal faith… trusting in Him and His death for our sins.
John 1:12 | 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God (ESV)
John 3:16-18 | For this is the way God loved the world: he gave his one and only Son that everyone who believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. 18 The one who believes in Him is not condemned. The one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. (ESV)
Ephesians 2:8-9 | 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. (ESV)
This makes it clear that true salvation is found in this way:
By recognizing ourselves as a desperate sinner, admitting our need for a savior, putting our faith in Christ alone (no other man or mediator), by grace alone (no other works or deeds), through faith alone… putting all of our hope and trust in Him alone.
Paul writes in Romans 10:9-13, 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (ESV)
